[My DIY] Heart Ring

4.04.2012
This and other step-by-steps on Pinterest here

It is crazy to think that my book is coming out in less than two weeks. I received a stack of copies in the mail to sign, and I could not believe that this day has finally come. Even though I am spending some time in Florida with the family, I've been working like a mad woman to prepare. My parents are shocked at how many hours I can stare at a computer, but are helping out by making Hobby Lobby trips and coffee runs with me, and DIYing tassels in bulk while watching DWTS :) I planned a different DIY for today, but decided to watch American Idol (Phil Phillips anyone?) with my Mom, drink some wine and have some much needed down time. Unable to stay still for too long, I started bending some wire into heart rings, and thought, why not share the steps with you!
Instructions after the break...

Supplies: Jewelry Pliers and wire.

Bend the wire over the far part of the plier to make the first hill of the heart.
Next make a hard bend at the bottom of the hill.
The make the second hill.

Squeeze in the valley between the two hill to make a point
Next bend the wire so it will fit around you finger.
Cut off the excess wire and bend to make a loop at the end.

  12. Make sure that isn't galvanized wire, its very toxic and shouldn't be around your mouth. If you lost the package you will know it galvanized because it will leave a dirty black residue on your fingers.

  22. If you make a smaller version it could be an ear cuff! Too cute!

  23. This is absolutely amazing, Jenni! You could also make it a little larger to make a cuff bracelet... maybe hearts on both ends?

  43. can anyone tell me what kind of wire i should get? i have a craft wire 24 gauge but it doesnt look like in the picture so i guess i need something thicker. thanks!

  44. I used 12 gauge jewelry wire that I bought at Micheals. I tried 16 gauge at first, but I had some trouble with it since it was more pliable and was too bent up by the time I was done with it (I think I may have been using dead soft wire so that could have been part of it). But then I tried it with the 12 gauge wire and it turned out great! I absolutely love my ring (I'm wearing it today) and made ones for my sisters and friends as well!

  45. Wow, this is so cute!! I also made a bracelet version as well. It turned out great.

  47. You didn't state what type of wire. Could you please let us know?

    ReplyDelete
  48. I see you stated you thought 20 gage, sorry I didn't read through all the posts first. It looks really heavy wire, when you cut it, is it sharpe enough to cut skin?

  49. I love this. Must give it a try

  50. Hi, I was wondering how long (inches) was the piece of wire?

    1. I believe it depends on your finger size.

  54. i just finished it...WOW it is soooo cute it did not turn out as cute as yours but it was exceptional!

  55. Just putting this out there as a person with a number of piercings, but 20 gauge would likely cut your finger if the ring got caught and pulled on - Think of the wire cheese cutters here. I was told horror stories by my piercer about girls wearing big hoop earrings and then getting in a fight. O_o

Also the wire in the photos is NOT 20 gauge. More likely 12 gauge, which is what I got at Michael's today. It's not overly pliable by hand and not likely to cause injury like a "smaller" gauge (the larger the number, the smaller the wire).
