The other day, a button fell off one of my coats, and instead on sewing it back on I decided to turn it into a new bracelet! Once I made one, I could not stop. Instead of ripping the fasteners off all my jackets I stopped by M&J Trimming and stared at the "wall of buttons" for far too long, and picked out a bunch. Next on my list is a summer set made with Nautical buttons!
Supplies: 1 yard of wax rope, 2 buttons (one large and one small)

I can't wait to mix these in with my everyday wrist of bracelets.
Make in a million colors, steps after the break!
Step 1: Cut 4 pieces of wax cord each a 1.5ft long
Step 2: Take 1 piece of cord and thread through a hole of the larger button and pull to the center. Take a second piece of cord and do the same with a hole next to the first. Tie a knot. Repeat on the opposite side.
Step 3: After knotting, braid the four ends (double up one strand)
Step 4: Repeat on the opposite side.
Step 5: On one side, knot at the end of the braid, then thread each of the stings through each hole of the smaller button. Then knot above the button.
Step 6: On the opposite side create a loop by braiding to the end and then knotting the cord to itself. Put the button through the loop to fasten.

I saw these bracelets on Pinterest and fell in love! I'm a bit of a DIY newbie however and I'm having a hard time figuring out Step 6. I can't get a good knot. (I figured out the button side fine.) Would you please elaborate on how I do my knot? I can't wait to make a million of these! Thanks.

thank you! just made two.. i used colored bamboo "hemp" instead. I found that i prefer mine without the braid, i think it looks cool with just four loose strings :) i couldn't figure out step 6, so i improvised.. great post though, thanks!

ReplyDeleteI made one too, thank you for the advice!
ReplyDeleteI didn't buy enough cord in one colour, so I did it with blue and yellow.
Also had some trouble with step 6, but somehow managed to pull it together and it looks cute!
you are amazing! thank you so much for all these wonderful ideas!!
ReplyDeleteI have a box of my late gramma's "extra buttons" and have been trying different dyi's to be able to gift them to other members of the family. Until now, each one has been hokey or way too obvious. these are simple and can be worn or put away as a keepsake. Using various string colours will personalize them. thank you SO MUCH!
ReplyDeleteSo cute . I am going to make a few of these. For my grand-daughters
ReplyDeleteJ'aime beaucoup many thanks
ReplyDeleteI love this. But how do you knot the cord at the sides of the button?
ReplyDeletebeautifulllll!!..where can I find the cord??..any idea?craft shop or tailor shop?

The material listing is off - it says 1 yard of wax rope but then step one is to cut the rope into 4 pieces @ 1.5 feet each. If 3 feet are in a yard, then I actually need 2 yards of wax rope. 4 X 1.5 = 6.
