I have been pinning up a storm on Pinterest, and when I was looking through my DIY inspiration board, I came across this lovely heartbeat necklace (sold on etsy here). With some wire and chain I was able to create my own!
Supplies: 20 gauge wire, chain, lobster clasp, 2 jump rings, and round tip pliers
Leaving an inch of straight wire at the beginning,
use the tip of your pliers to bend the wire to create a heartbeat pattern.
More steps after the break...
Bend the wire until you create your heartbeat.
Make a loop on each side of the straight ends, attaching the chain to the wire.
On the other end of the chain, attach the lobster clasp with a jumpring. Add a jumpring to the other side of the chain and clasp.

While I appreciate your ability to DIY.... I feel you are taking away from the original artist in choosing to do a spin off of her design. You did link to her etsy site, but did you get her permission before you did a spinoff? Not an angry post, just want to be sure we're not taking away from other artists!

ReplyDeleteTo all the anonymous comments about Etsy - sort of agree but with lots of reservations. At least I Spy DIY didn't put her creation side by side with price comparisons like Livlig did 2 times here: http://www.livlig-online.com/index.php/kaleidoscope/ and here: http://www.livlig-online.com/index.php/diy-heart-art/ . I was actually shocked that no one commented on that which was really blatant! Other bloggers have also put their creations side by side in the post with Etsy crafts and no one has complained (except me in a post that wasn't anonymous). Also, there are other heartbeat necklaces on the internet, not just on Etsy (and I know she was modeling her's after the one on Etsy). As usual I feel very conflicted about the whole thing. It's funny but on Tumblr I feel like I would get a massive negative backlash if I did what Livlig did, and then I wonder why do some blogs get slammed for it (this one) and others not at all?

DeleteI have most certainly DIY'd items I've seen on Etsy where I just didn't have the money for the item in question, or I had the materials already in my craft room and I wanted the challenge of making them. And I've worn the stuff I've DIY'd on my blog, and have gotten requests for the tutorial for how to make them, and every single time I've refused to share the tutes. I feel like there is a line between the up-and-coming independent artisan and the overblown, high-priced luxury brand, and people not supporting the artisan is how our local economies have become eroded (at least in the U.S.!). Plus DIY is usually a down-and-dirty way of mimicking the look - but not the actual method of manufacture. When you're dealing with a piece as simple as this is, the how-to is likely exactly the same as what the original artist uses, with no substitutions or approximations. This makes me uncomfortable.
But ideas are ubiquitous, and oftentimes an idea for a piece has already been thought of and created a million times over. Had Jenni posted a collage of all the heartbeat necklaces she could find photos of, and then posted her re-interpretation of the idea, I would be totally okay with it!

ReplyDeleteI love your necklace, but it makes me feel a bit uncomfortable that you posted a tutorial on "how to make a copy of this necklace that's sold on Etsy." The seller is an independent artisan whose sterling silver original necklace is already quite affordable at $29.50. It's one thing to see something you like and DIY it for yourself and your own personal usage, and quite another to show everybody else how to DIY it (and you have quite a large number of followers, so it's not like this tutorial goes unnoticed). Though you have brought some recognition to the artist, you're also undermining her sales by showing people exactly how to get the look without buying it. This isn't a high-priced luxury item you're DIY'ing that is simply un-affordable via retail, or something that you've reinterpreted to your own taste.
I know with all the amazing handcrafted items on Etsy it's such a temptation to just DIY others' pieces rather than buying from their shops. With the release of your upcoming book you're becoming more of a public figure, and I'd love to see someone who sets a great example (with as much integrity as possible when it comes to DIY, which is essentially dealing in knockoffs LOL).
